for what its worth:
I use the Sears Craftsman Industrial Heat Gun to do all my bending and welding work with PVC and plastics. The temp is addjustable and tips are interchangable. If you are in the market for different tips check the internet because as with Sears the unit price is good but spare parts are out of sight. Also if you are making bends with the pipe, make a jig it is worth the time and money and really makes a difference on how the job turns out.
I have seen a hot box before. It was made from cement bathroom backer board with a 6" hole thru it. The heating element was from an elect clothes dryer.
