Ive seen on other forums were people are using play sand or other types in there aquarium. is this true . how harmful is it.any experiances

  2. I don't personally use it but I'm told it's okay as long as you seed it with live sand.

the sand you'd want for this hobby is calcareous rather than silaceous. do a search for yard rite, southdown, or old castle playsand. while i'm not sure that silaceous sand has been proven to leach out silicates, we generally would stay away from them...better safe than sorry...

The best is good old coral sand. Lots of calcium.

Don't waste your money on silica based sand. You're probably thinking of SouthDown sand, from Home Depot, but is never available at home depot's in this state. ONly the east coast seems to get it.

using a silica based sand such as play sand wont hurt, but it doesnt have the nice look of calcium based sand, it doesnt have the buffering capabilities, and it can scratch your glass. but if your hell bent on saving a few bucks then it wont hurt anything
