I've been popped a few times. The little ones don't really hurt. Large Peacock means business.

Clubbed on the knuckle.

Molted raptorial appendage. Notice the spear part above the club, it's essentially a razor.

I got too close to the Peacocks burrow and got sliced.

Bit of finger missing after cleaned up.

If one was to purposely try to catch lots of mantis shrimp for a meal, I don't see an easy or safe way to kill them when you get them in the boat. I guess you could put them in a plastic or metal container with partitions and then boil them alive when you get back to the kitchen... sort of like what we do with lobsters.

Check this video out. It looks like the cover photo is doctored-up. I jumped when one of the guys shoved the mantis shrimp at the camera.

These would look less gross when cooking if more of the shrimp was removed 1st.

Some species get really large and yes they are enjoyed table fare in some parts of the world.
While they make cool pets they need to be respected for what they are... underwater samurai
I've had many run ins with some large tangs that left scars on my hands, Risk we understand and take with our hobby.
And you get a mantis and You get a mantis and You get a mantis hahahahahah
