So this guy cut up a bunch of marinepure to increase flow. But I thought marinepure let water flow through no problem. And another guy says to increase surface area. Either I’m grossly misinformed or these guys are lost.

Are we talking about the block or the balls? Either way, Marinepure is porous so nitrifying bacteria propagates both on the surface and inside. So, you want to position it so water has to flow through it for maximum effectiveness/filtration. It is less effective just sitting on the bottom of your sump for example.

some folks cut the large blocks down a bit to fit into sump baffles and such.

I agree if they are cutting the blocks for more water flow OR for more space for bacteria to colonize then YES they are indeed lost
