The power filter, is one of the fundamentals of the DSR method.
It is just a a name for a strong pump with filter wool on the intake.
It removes annoying small particles and clouding from the water, which prevent detritus from settling in low flow area. It’s essential to manage an optimal flow ( not necessary strong), to keep the dirt into suspension, so it can be picked up by the power filter
A optimal working power filter can produce a crystal clear result, without any additional filtering media. A power filter require a powerful pump
Minimum is capacity required:
– 1000l/h for tanks up to 200l ……….. (H.max > 1,25m)
– 2400-3000l/h for tanks up to 1000l (H.max > 2m)

Optimal performance is reach by replacing filterwool every 2-3 days. Use alternating flow and occasionally stir up the sandbed if it takes longer for the filterwool to get saturated. Don’t use the filterwool longer than 5 days, because it will have an ill effect on the corals. A well maintained system can go without a powerfilter for a few weeks. i.e. during vacation

Why is Aquarium carbon (GAC - Granular Activated Carbon) not used in DSR?

Normally, due to the decomposition of organic material, the aquarium water will become cloudy and eventually turn yellow. Normally this was addressed with water changes in combination with activated carbon.

In DSR we do this differently. We do not do water changes but use the combination of:

A- fullDSR, Powerfilter + CarbonVS + Fe + (optionally supported by a skimmer)

B- EZDSR Powerfilter + EZCarbon (optionally supported by a skimmer)

This combination (A / B) filters the water crystal clear.
If you let the PF become completely saturated (let it work for max. 8-12 hours), so that it generates micro bubbles, it will eventually even remove the existing yellowing from the water.
This achieves almost the same clear water effect as with the use of activated carbon.

This effect only takes effect if the power filter is used for a maximum of 5 days and between 2-4 days and only if there is enough dirt to clogged up the filtermedia, so it can filter out micro particles.
If the system does not contain any dirt, it will never come to that.

Activated carbon is only used in emergencies and poisoning. E.g. in case of fish death or overdoses.

Now we finally get into the mechanics of your system :). Based on above, I venture DSR is a total carbon based approach to reef keeping. Coupling the carbon dosing with iron dosing is interesting. I have seen both discussed over many years, carbon far more than iron. I don't recall anyone discussing these two being used together for a common purpose.

I look forward to your discussion on phosphate management ;)

DSR is a total reefkeeping solution.
The CarbonVS in target on primary lowering nitrate and feeding the corals with biomass or exporting it by means of the powerfilter. For this process PO4 is required, but not primarily lowered...
The Fe+ is liquified iron dosing which chemicaly reacts in the water with phosphate and percipitate. This percipitate will be exported together with the biomass by the Powerfilter. The Fe+ dosing will primarily target phosphate, but may also slightly reduce nitrate as well.
The liquid iron is typical DSR and also benefit the corals in the reeftank. This is one of the many reasons why my reeftanks are known all over the world.

it all comes down to the powerfilter, which support both dosing methods to make it work as it does.

When your turn the system to work for you and the corals start growing, they will take up all the nutrients. There is where the PO4+ and NO3+ comes in.

DSR is one of the first who not only target on lowering nutrients, but also had an approach for maintaining steady levels once things get seriously going.
This calculator was designed in 2013 when nobody dare dosing NO3/PO4.

This movie explain it all.
